Helen was selected to be part of University of Atypical’s project ‘Accessing Architecture’. Each selected artist would run participatory workshops for people with disabilities to explore ideas around disability and the build environment. However, this project was interrupted by the 2020 pandemic! The projects had to move online and then outdoors.
Exploring a movement response, Helen worked with a umber of participants to explore how they ‘move’ through the city and how this journey is unique to them. Turning the patterns, the obstacles, the freedoms into a creative expression of movement.
Helen spent time with participants moving though the city. She gathered video footage, from both the view point of observer and, using go-pros on harnesses, the viewpoint of the mover. She also gathered spoken or text responses from each participant. Helen then edited some short films celebrating these shared ‘city journeys’.
